Recipe for warm homemade caramel sauce
Preheat your oven to 375 degrees and grease an 8×8 (or 9 inch cake pan) with butter. In the prepared pan, scatter the apples so they are in an even layer and set off to the side. In a medium bowl combine the sugar, flour, oats, cinnamon and nutmeg. Use a pastry blender to combine. Add in the softened butter and blend (still using the pastry blender) until combined. Sprinkle the oatmeal mixture over top of the apples and then scatter the pecans. Bake for 30 minutes in the lower third of your oven or until the top is golden and the apples are tender. We like our crisp with scoops of vanilla bean ice cream and warm caramel sauce drizzled over top!
*Note: We like our apples tender but with a little bit of firmness. For more tender apples you may want to bake the pan on the lowest rack in the oven to avoid the pecans becoming burnt.
